Determinants of Clove Exports in Zanzibar: Implications for Policy

This paper analyses factors for the declining trend in clove exports Zanzibar using time series data that were collected between 1980 and 2020 analysed vector error correction model, complemented with qualitative analysis. Clove production, producer price, world gross domestic product, exchange rate showed positive statistically significant effects long run at one per cent significance level, while foreign direct investment, population growth rate, rainfall, capital formation negative effect. Inflation had no Some affected indirectly through production. Extension services poor local price of cloves was low not stable. We conclude determined by many interlinked factors. recommend an integrated policy approach takes on board, comprehensively, all determining to improve sustain exports.
